Judge Eddie Trevino of Cameron County confirmed that the request meets the requirements for the area to become a district. If the election passes, it will be the newest town in Cameron County since 1995. Only residents living near the launch site in Cameron County on the US-Mexico border and numbering less than 500 will be able to vote. In December, over 70 residents signed a petition requesting a vote to consider the Starbase area where SpaceX is located as a city. Established in 2014, SpaceX, owned by Musk, has only 10 out of about 250 plots within the proposed new city limits. According to a local study released by the county last year, over 3,400 full-time SpaceX employees and contractors work at the Starbase site.
